This project is intended as a supplement to Nevada Vascular Plants: an Annotated Checklist of the State's Botanical Diversity, by Arnold (Jerry) Tiehm & Jan Nachlinger. Click HERE for details about how this site works.
(May take up to ~10 seconds to update with the full expanded dataset.)
Area Filter
Taxon
Exclude Taxa
Hides matching taxa from the map regardless of any other filter. Matches by genus or full species name (case-insensitive, partial match) — e.g. "Artemisia" excludes the whole genus, "Artemisia tridentata" excludes just that species. Separate several with commas, e.g. "Artemisia tridentata, Bromus tectorum".
Endemism Category
"Non-endemic" = officially BLM/USFS/ESA/NV special-status per the Nevada Division of Natural Heritage, or tracked on NDNH's watchlist and ranked for rarity by NatureServe — but not a narrow Nevada endemic. Independent of the other three, and independent of Conservation Status/Rarity Rank below; a taxon can be Endemic and ESA-listed, or Non-endemic with no rank at all.
Data Source
Conservation Status
Per the Nevada Division of Natural Heritage. All three are taxon-level statuses, same as ESA/NV above — and independent of endemism, so these apply to Endemic/Near-endemic/Disjunct taxa too, not just Non-endemic ones. NatureServe Rarity Rank is a scientific rarity assessment (G1 = Critically Imperiled globally, through G5 = Secure) — a different kind of thing from BLM/USFS/ESA/NV, which are legal designations.
🗺️ Geographic Filters — point's actual location
Computing county/region resolution stats…
County
Physiographic Region
Named Place
Real official boundaries (USFWS/USFS) for specific named localities the book discusses.
Go to Place (general navigation, not a filter)
Jumps the map to an approximate centroid for a named place — not an exact boundary, and several locations can share similar names. Useful for general orientation, not for precise filtering (use Geographic Filters above for that).
Book Category (taxon-level, from the book)
Habitat/distribution descriptors (Cliff-dwelling, Disjunct, Foothills, etc.) — these describe a pattern, not a checkable location, so they stay taxon-level. For an actual place like Ash Meadows, use the Named Place filter above instead — it checks real coordinates, this doesn't.
Genus
iNat Quality Grade
iNat GPS Accuracy
Obscured points are randomized by iNat (often 10–20+ km) to protect sensitive species. The accuracy filter above now correctly reflects this — obscured points report their true (large) public uncertainty, not the device's original precision — but checking this box adds an explicit, unambiguous exclusion. Affects iNat points only; herbarium records are unaffected by either control.

Endemism (fill style)
Endemic — solid fill
Near-endemic — open ring
Disjunct — dashed ring
Colors cycle by species when no single taxon is selected.
Offline Base Map
Caches a statewide low-detail USGS Topo basemap (~140–235MB, one-time) so the map background still shows with no signal. Nothing downloads unless you click below — do this once, on Wi-Fi.
Area Herbarium/iNat Search
Draw a polygon or box to search for any plant records there — not just endemics. Optionally filter by genus or full species name below (e.g. "Artemisia" or "Astragalus phoenix"); leave blank for all plants. Requires internet. Large areas or large result sets will prompt a warning.
Note: since this queries GBIF/iNat directly, results may include names that aren't compatible with Tiehm & Nachlinger's checklist (synonyms, excluded taxa). We hope to flag these automatically in a future update.
